Microsoft is leading the charge with 2-in-1 devices according to a recent report from Strategy Analytics. The data analysis revealed that Windows tablets had a 25% increase in shipments in Q3 2016. That’s 7.3 million units being shipped compared to the 5.8 million from last year.

The 16% market share seems to be putting the fire under Apple as well. Peter King from Tablet & Touchscreen Strategies stated:

“Microsoft has led a transformation in the tablet market with its Surface Pro and Surface Book. Apple is now reliant on iPad Pro for tablet and laptop replacement, while many other PC OEMs abandon Android Slates in favor of more expensive 2-in-1 Windows Tablets for better productivity and versatility.”

It seems that Apple iOS shipments fell 6% while Android branded vendors fell with a drastic 17% from last year. The 2-in-1 success isn’t particularly new. Other studies have found that the devices are possible to remove the need for tablet and/or laptops in the future with consumers opting for the happy medium between both. Even VP of Surface Marketing Brian Hall predicts that Apple will create a touchscreen Mac in response to the of Microsoft’s devices.
