Microsoft started off its new-year executive shuffling by promoting longtime Server and Tools unit head Bob Muglia to President, a title he shares with Entertainment boss Robbie Bach and business software chief Stephen Elop.
It's a title elevation for Muglia, whose responsibilities remain the same. It also reflects the growing importance of the server unit, which accounted for $13 billion in revenue in the most recent fiscal year, now making up fully a fifth of Microsoft's total sales.

With Macworld set to start Tuesday, Microsoft is once again moving to portray Apple computers as overpriced compared to PCs, especially in the "midst of difficult economic times."

True or not (and there are indications the rumors might not be true) all the talk of forthcoming Microsoft lay offs seems to be encouraging Wall Street analysts to essentially call for Microsoft job cuts.
In a report today, Goldman Sachs' Sarah Friar says lay offs at Microsoft are "likely" and would be "good for the shares."

The Recording Industry Association of America has dumped the company charged with gathering evidence for use against people accused of illegally sharing copyrighted music, according to a report Sunday in The Wall Street Journal.
As part of its controversial antipiracy strategy, the RIAA had enlisted MediaSentry to search the Internet for evidence of people sharing large amounts of music. The trade group's campaign on behalf of the world's largest recording labels reportedly resulted in lawsuits against about 35,000 people.

Todd Bishop: Marcus Courtney, a one-time Microsoft contract worker, left his job as president of the Seattle-based WashTech technology labor union last year for a new position at the UNI Global Union in Switzerland. He left without fanfare, but he was back in Seattle visiting relatives for the holidays, and we got a chance to sit down with him...

Pretty much every product that Google works on has to go through gatekeeper Marissa Mayer, who decides whether it's ready to be released or needs more work.
She even approves every single Google Doodle that adorns the search giant's homepages around the world. From being hired as the first female engineer nine and a half years ago to becoming one of the key decision makers at Google, she's come a long way.

Long Zheng: For some users, one hurdle of the new "superbar" is its enormous size, or so it appears. To set the record straight, I conducted a little side-by-side experiment with two quick-launch items and two active applications on both Vista and Windows 7. Together with a measuring tape in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other, I counted. Soon enough, I grew impatient and resorted to Photoshop instead. Here's how they measured up...

Microsoft will embark on a significant cost-cutting initiative in 2009, which might begin as early as this month, to offset a global slowdown in sales. However, sources tell Jim Goldman of CNBC, the cuts will largely be handled through attrition and the non-renewal of contract employees, rather than through a rumored, sweeping layoff...
