With Yahoo off the table, Microsoft plans to challenge Google's online-ad juggernaut alone. A behind-the-scenes look at its provocative strategy.
It's April, and Microsoft's (MSFT) top U. S. salesman for online advertising, Keith Lorizio, is visiting clients in New York City. In a midtown office tower, he sits down with Nicholas Utton, the gregarious chief marketing officer at online broker E*Trade (ETFC). Utton is plenty impressed with Microsoft's technology, and he's a big advertiser on the company's MSN Money site. But when it comes to Internet search sites, the largest and most lucrative advertising market online, Utton makes it clear that Microsoft is, as he sees it, way behind front-runner Google (GOOG). "They're not getting much of our search dollars," he says.

The .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 Beta delivers more controls, a streamlined setup, improved start-up performance, and powerful new graphics features for WPF development. This release includes numerous bug fixes and the following feature areas:
New and improved graphics capabilities for both 2D and 3D
New controls and extensibility
Performance improvements for startup and runtime, as well as streamlined setup
Interop with HTML (DOM) as well as DirectX
As part of the streamlined setup we are introducing a new .NET Framework 3.5 Client Profile which is a perfect subset of the .NET Framework 3.5 targeted exclusively at client applications and clients scenarios. The Client Profile will work with ClickOnce application deployments.

Brandon LeBlanc: I caught up with Deryl McCartney, Marketing Manager for the Windows Vista Logo Program, to get a general update on Certified for Windows Vista product as of today.
Just to re-cap: Certified for Windows Vista products are products that carry the above logo. This logo represents a group of applications and hardware that have gone through an extensive certification process that means they work great with Windows Vista. We want users who are looking for devices, applications, or PC components to easily be able to identify the ones that will give them the best experience in Windows Vista today. When I go into a store looking for something for my PCs I always "look for the logo".
As of April, we currently have over 5,000 products that are Certified for Windows Vista. Since last July, the amount of Certified for Windows Vista products has almost doubled! As you can see - we've seen quite a bit of growth with new Certified for Windows Vista products entering the market.

A US-based security consultancy plans to release software next month that it claims will help employers launch ethical phishing attacks against their own employees.
The phishing software is designed to test how susceptible staff or customers are to phishing attacks, according to its maker, Intrepidus Group.
The company claims on its Web site the software allows security testers to pull content from other sites and drop it as a phishing e-mail, add e-mail addresses, set up attack schedules, and then track which staff are the weakest links.

Microsoft Corp.'s plan to fill its mammoth Chicago data center with servers housed in 40-foot shipping containers has experts wondering whether the strategy will succeed. In Microsoft's plan, each container in the data center, still being built, will be filled with several thousand servers.
Computerworld queried several outside experts — including the president of a data center construction firm, a data center engineer-turned-CIO, an operations executive for a data center operator and a "green" data center consultant — to get their assessments of the strategy. While they were individually impressed with some parts of Microsoft's plan, they also expressed skepticism that the idea will work in the long term.

Google Analytics may be free, but it is still based on proprietary technology - which means you only ever get reports on the things that Google thinks are necessary and some of those reports are aimed at people using Google's other services (managing campaigns on AdWords, for example). Further, using Google Analytics means that you're tied to Google's TOS. Enter Piwik, which aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics. It is closely affiliated with OpenX, the open source ad server alternative to Google Ad Manager.

Just about a week after re-branding its GeForce 8800 GS into GeForce 9600 GSO, Nvidia Corp., admitted that its product lineup was too confusing for consumers because of its model numbering scheme. But while the top supplier of discrete graphics processing units (GPUs) acknowledged the issue, it made no promises or announcements.
"It is a challenge that we are looking at right now. There is a need to simplify it for consumers, there is no question. We think that the people who understand and know GeForce today, they are okay with it – they understand it. But if we are going to widen our appeal, there’s no doubt that we have to solve that problem," said Roy Taylor, vice president of content business development at Nvidia, in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz web-site.

Bill Snow and Ed Eades are a couple of IT managers with very different businesses and data center setups.
But they are totally in sync on at least one thing: their data recovery systems are of supreme importance, and nothing is left to chance.
Snow, IT manager at Moss & Associates building contractors in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has a hub-and-spoke kind of system, in which each construction site becomes a remote location for the main data center. He has two data center locations in the Southeast and can switch them on and off at will, using a single Web-based control console.
