While nearly five years old, the PlayStation 2 continues to be a considerable force at retail in the United States, even outselling the Xbox 360, data from the NPD Group indicates. Only in one month since Microsoft launched its next generation console, April, has the company been able to best the venerable game system.
In May, the PS2 sold approximately 232,000 units to the Xbox 360's 221,000. In April, the roles were reversed, with the Xbox 360 outpacing the PS2 by about 90,000 consoles with an estimated 295,381 consoles sold.

The legendary programmer behind Doom and Quake talks about his new project—making great games for your mobile phone.
With games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, computer programmer John Carmack is widely considered as one of the fathers of the popular—and sometimes controversial—first-person-shooter genre of videogames. Even with all his success, the 35-year-old remains at heart a tinkerer, shown by his longtime interest in rockets, and, more recently, games for mobile phones, including Doom RPG [role-playing game], a translation of the PC classic. NEWSWEEK's N'Gai Croal caught up with Carmack a few days before the start of the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3)—the world's biggest videogame conference—to discuss his upcoming mobile phone game, Orcs & Elves.

Taunton (MA) - Virtual Reality is one of those promising technologies that keeps running out of steam just when they could get interesting for the mass market. Here's a new try: 3001 AD believes 2005 is the year for mainstream VR and preps a $500 high-tech headset for game consoles.
Remember the monstrous and futuristic Virtual Reality stages from the mid 90s? Many of us, especially journalists believed this to be the future of gaming. Unfortunately, these platforms, typically priced above $10,000, never made it beyond themeparks and cyber cafes. Still, VR always has been a simmering technology that has been waiting for its mainstream opportunity.
This opportunity could come along in the fourth quarter of this year, when 3001AD, a company that builds high-end VR machines for large-scale entertainment centers, will introduce a headset that can be used in combination with the Xbox and the Playstation game consoles and several blockbuster game titles.

Microsoft is setting some aggressive sales goals for its next-generation Xbox.
Apparently, it should only take the 12 to 16 months for the team in Redmond to sell more than 10 million units around the globe. This is according to Peter Moore, Microsoft's vice president in charge of marketing and resident Xbox pitch man.
Moore made the claim during his keynote at an Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) event in Kensington, London on Tuesday.
Certainly it's a better prognosis than Microsoft made four years ago when the original Xbox had trouble selling more than one million consoles in its first year. Microsoft didn't see a sales bump until well after it dropped the price. Prices for the Xbox 360 have not been released yet but analysts suggest the price point should be around $299. A first generation Xbox currently retails for $149 online.

Deal will allow Xbox 360 to run Xbox titles, but tinkering with software is still needed
Microsoft has signed a deal with NVIDIA to license the company's technology in order to enable backwards compatibility in the Xbox 360, which uses an ATI graphics chipset that isn't natively compatible with Xbox titles.
The question of how to get Xbox 360 - which uses a radically different architecture to the Xbox - to play Xbox titles has been a major problem for Microsoft, and it's rumoured that backwards compatibility wasn't actually part of the original specification of the console.
Indeed, it wasn't even confirmed that the system would be able to play Xbox games until E3 this year, when Microsoft announced that "best-selling" Xbox titles would work on the Xbox 360 - a curious piece of double-speak which the software giant refused to clarify fully.
